Update August 2026
Update: the EU has extended temporary protection to 4 March 2028 (Decision (EU) 2026/1912, in force since 5 August 2026). Existing TIE cards are currently valid until 4/03/2027 (Orden INT/96/2026) while Spain publishes the new extension.
The situation today
Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/1460 keeps temporary protection in force across the EU until 4 March 2027, and it can still be requested in Spain during that period.
Orden INT/96/2026 automatically extended the validity of every TIE already issued to temporary-protection holders to that same date, even if the card shows an earlier expiry.
No renewal needed
The extension is direct: no new card, no appointment, no fee. If someone charges you to “renew your temporary-protection card”, be wary: that procedure doesn’t exist right now.
If a bank or employer says your card isn’t valid, the rule to quote is Orden INT/96/2026.
When you do need an appointment
Your first TIE after protection is granted.
A replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged card, with the police report or the damaged card.
A change of status, for example to an ordinary residence permit or international protection.
New since August 2026
New applications for temporary protection must show compliance with any applicable military obligations. This affects new applicants, not people who already hold a card.
